Boats Story Time: March 11-12, 2019

Books:
Blue Boat by Kersten Hamilton
The Dad With 10 Children by Benedicte Guettier
Dinosailors by Deb Lund
Little Tug by Stephen Savage *
One-Dog Canoe by Mary Casanova *
Turtle Tug to the Rescue by Michael Slack *

Craft: Pirate Ship
This week's craft is based on the picture at left.  The children folded a small paper plate in half and colored it for the hull of the ship.  They then colored the rectangle with circle windows and pirate flag before gluing to the ends of a craft stick.  The craft stick was then glued to the folded edge of the paper plate.

Extension Activities:
- Turtle Tug invents a boat that is also part turtle.  Have your child come up with other animals that might make good boats and have them draw a picture of it.
- Make a simple boat and see if it will float.  You can use either a plastic lid, plastic plate, or a styrofoam plate for the base.  A paper sail can be glued to a craft stick.  The craft stick can then be attached to base with a small amount of playdough to keep it upright.

Notes:
Try to find the original version of The Dad with 10 Children by Benedicte Guettier.  The original was titled The Father Who Had 10 Children.  I think the flow of the story was better than in the newer translation in The Dad with 10 Children.
