Green -- 6/24/25

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Caterpillar
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out pieces (body, head)

- Cut along straight black lines to get legs

- Color pieces (back and front)

- Fold legs so every other leg is folded backwards or forwards

- Glue head to front of caterpillar

Extension Activities:

- Go on a leaf scavenger hunt.  How many different types of green leaves can you collect.  Can you identify them?  If not, check out a leaf identification book from the library.

- Have a green food taste testing.  Try different green foods such as kiwi, grapes, green beans, broccoli, asparagus, cucumbers, pickles, etc.

Craft: Green Sheep

- Print out template onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out sheep and color

- Cut green paper into small strips

- Optional: Tear green paper into smaller strips, curl the strips, or fold them

- Glue green paper onto sheep

Extension Activities:

- Riddles are basically short mysteries.  Ask your child some riddles to see if they can "solve" the answers.

- Have fun writing secret messages.  Use a white crayon on white paper to write a message.  Then brush over the message with watercolor paint.  The message should appear through the paint.

Craft:  Curly Colorful Sheep

- Print out template of sheep.

- Optional -- Cut out sheep if you like.

- Color sheep.

- Roll small strips of colored paper into curls and glue onto sheep.

- Variation:  Tear colored paper into small pieces and glue onto sheep as if collage.

Extension Activities:

- My Friends Make My Happy has the characters guessing what makes sheep happy that starts with the letter "F".  Ask your child to come up with lists of items that make them happy for each letter of the alphabet.

- Go on a scavenger hunt to find green items like the sheep.

Craft: Shamrock Necklace
The kids colored a shamrock cutout which was then strung onto a length of curling ribbon along with beads to make into a necklace.

Extension Activities --
- Where Is the Green Sheep is a great lead in to going on a scavenger hunt.  Ask your child to find items of different colors throughout your house.
- Learn about St. Patrick's Day.  There are several books at the library that can be checked out or search online for kid friendly websites and videos.

Craft: Standing Sheep
Children colored a sheep body that was folded in half to stand and then glued on the sheep's head.  They could then glue on multi-colored pieces of yarn to give the sheep wool.

Literacy Extensions:
- See if there is a working sheep farm nearby to visit that will allow your child to interact with the sheep.
- Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep gives the basic steps of turning sheep's wool into sweaters by knitting.  Maybe try some simple finger knitting or paper weaving with your child.

Craft: Goat Headband
The children colored the head, horns, ears, and beard of the goat before gluing them all together and then onto strips of paper turned into a headband.

Literacy Extensions:
- Continue the counting fun by having your children count items throughout the house (i.e. chairs in a room, magnets on the refrigerator, etc.).
- The author Mem Fox is from Australia and her books The Magic Hat and Possum Magic reflect that country in the animals and food from that country.  Learn more about Australia by checking out some books at the library.

Children were given a sheep cutout.  They could color their sheep before gluing on multi-colored yarn pieces.

- Discuss how clothes are made from sheep's wool (i.e. Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep)
