Craft: Paper Tube Dog
- Color rectangle dog body before gluing to make a tube.
- Color ears and glue to top of tube's sides.
Optional: Glue on sequins or pompoms to decorate your dog.
Extension Activities:
- The Pigeon doesn't seem to know much pet care. Ask your child what they would need to do to take care of pet. You can also check out a pet care book from the library.
- Have your child draw a picture of their ideal pet.
- Watch a pet themed movie such as The Secret Life of Pets or 101 Dalmatians.

Craft: Carrot Shapes Match
- Print off two copies of the template. (Template at left.)
- Cut out the shapes (triangles, squares, and circles) of one of the templates. Color shapes.
- Color other template.
- Glue cut out shapes to matching shapes on the whole page.
Extension Activities:
- Go over colors with your child by seeing what vegetables they can name that are different colors.
- Get messy by doing some veggie painting/stamping. Some great vegetables to use for this are potatoes, corn, carrots, etc.).
- Go on a vegetable scavenger hunt in your pantry. Ask your child to find various cans of different vegetables.

Craft: Pete the Cat Puppet
- Color Pete's face before gluing to bottom of the paper bag
- Cut two strips of yellow paper (6.5 inches x 2.75 inches) and glue to side of bag for Pete's shirt. (You can fold down the top inside corners to make a collar if you like.)
- Put on four stickers to hold shirt closed.
Extension Activities:
- In Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, readers count the buttons on Pete's shirt. Practice counting by having your child count various things on their clothes (i.e. stripes on shirt, pockets on pants/shorts, etc.).
- Practice dexterity and hand coordination by having your child practice buttoning shirts.
- Did you know Pete the Cat was a real cat? Learn his story and how he came to be featured in books by visiting the website petethecat.com/pages/bio.

- Print out penguin template. (Template at end of post.)
- Color picture.
- Tear black, white, and orange construction paper into small pieces.
- Glue construction paper pieces onto template to finish picture.
Extension Activities:
- Try ice racing. Use straws to blow ice cubes from one end of a cookie sheet to the other end.
- Practice counting. Count the penguins in the book you are reading. (If you don't have a book at home, use A Penguin Story on Tumblebooks.)
- Watch a penguin movie such as March of the Penguins, Happy Feet, or Mr. Popper's Penguins.
