Extension Activities:
- Not Now, Cow is all about seasons and the clothes and activities for each season.  Ask your child to pull out appropriate clothes and/or toys for the season you name.
- After reading Something Stinks, have a smell test.  Ask your child to close their eyes and then tell you what object you have by smell.

Craft: Cone Santa
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Color Santa
- Cut out colored cone with tab
- Glue along the tab before rolling into cone.  You may want to tape to reinforce the glue.
- Optional:  Glue pieces of cotton ball or tissue paper on Santa's beard



Extension Activities:
- Make Christmas cards for family and friends.  This allows your child to both practice their writing and be creative artistically.
- Go on a scavenger hunt for Christmas related items (ex - candy canes, ornaments, star, etc.).

Extension Activities:
- Both of this week's books involve some fun word play.  Play a word game with your child.  Ask them to make up "funny" rhyming words.
- Play a game of hide and seek.

- Make some pasta art.  Glue different pasta shapes onto heavy paper to make a picture.  Optional -- dye the pasta different colors first.

Craft: Carrot Patch (inspired by picture at left)
- Print out template on cardstock or heavy paper.
- Cut out rectangle, strip with dotted lines, and carrots.
- Color strip with dotted lines as dirt before cutting along dotted lines.  (Do not cut all the way across.)
- Glue strip with cut lines to rectangle.  Only glue the sides.
- Color carrots.
- Slide carrots between cut strips to "plant" them.


Extension Activities:
- Create a Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head out of a real potato.
- Have a family Carrot Crunch Contest.  See who can eat and crunch carrots the loudest.  (This can also work with celery.)

- Glue small red pieces of paper to the center of a paper plate
- Glue small green pieces of paper around the edges of the paper plate
- Fold plate in half

Extension Activities:
- See how many different types of fruit your child can name.  Have them poll family and friends to see which fruits are their favorites.
- Visit the grocery story or local market.  Ask your child to name the different fruits they see.
- Try a fruit that you haven't had before.

- Glue hat to top of bacon

- Draw eyes between hat and mustache






Extension Activities:
- Ask your child about their favorite deli lunch meat.  Have your child help make lunch by assisting to make a sandwich using their favorite deli meat.
- Make some food art.  Make a pepperoni pizza using the tiny pepperoni.  Ask your child to "draw" a picture using the pepperoni on the pizza.

Extension Activities:
-  Have a cheese tasting to see which kinds of cheese your child likes.  Cheeses to try include mozzarella, cheddar, American, swiss, colby jack, havarti, etc.
- See if your child can name different kids of dairy products (i.e. milk, yogurt, etc.).

- Cut out circles for eyes and glue onto the top of a brown paper lunchbag
- Cut strips of white paper and glue onto bag for mummy strips

Extension Activities:
- Both books are about fears.  Talk with your child about what things they are scared of.  Then come up with ideas to help settle those fears.
- Ask your child to come up with a Halloween costume using items you have around the house.  (i.e. use a sheet to become a ghost, cut out and tape facial features to an orange shirt to become a jack-o-lantern, etc.)

- Color ovals different pumpkin colors
- Glue ovals together to make pumpkin shape.  (Largest oval in the middle with mid-sized ovals on either side and smallest ovals on the ends.)
- Glue on eyes and draw on smile
- Color and glue on short rectangle stem and leaf to top of pumpkin
- Color long rectangle as vine.  Then curl and glue to top by stem and leaf.

Extension Activities:
- Visit a pumpkin patch.  Select a pumpkin to take home and decorate.
- Roast some pumpkins seeds using a little olive oil and various spices (Visit https://wholefully.com/roasted-pumpkin-seeds-six-ways/ for directions and spice recipes).

- Go on a nature walk and try to find as many different types of leaves as you can.
- Collect fallen leaves and glue them onto paper to make pictures.

Craft: Fall Puzzle
- Print picture at left onto heavy paper or cardstock
- Color picture
- Cut along the straight lines to make a 16 piece puzzle












Extension Activities:
- Go on a fall nature walk.  Look for fall items including fallen leaves, acorns, etc.
- Make an apple birdseed feeder for the fall birds.  Core an apple.  String through a piece of string, rope, etc with a stick tied at the end for a hanger.  Fill the hole with peanut butter mixed with bird seed.  Hang on a tree branch.

Craft:  Dog Puppet
- Color a lunch-size brown paper bag as dog's body
- Print out template and cut out
- Color dog's head and glue to bottom of bag
- Color ears and glue to either side of dog's head
- Color tongue and glue inside bottom flap of bag underneath the dog's head





Extension Activities:
- After reading Bad Dog, have your child determine whether the pet makes a better dog or cat.  Why?
- Discuss traditions you have with your children.  Do you have a special day that you do things together?  What things do you do?

- Stomp is all about following directions.  Play a game of Follow the Leader or Simon Says.
- Read a book to a pet or stuffed animal.  Don't worry if your child can't read yet.  Have them "read" or tell the story from the pictures.

- Print out template at left onto heavy paper or cardstock
- Cut out pigeon's head, School box, and bus
- Color pieces
- Glue school box to bus below windows
- Glue pigeon's head in the first window as either driver or passenger










Extension Activities:
- Does your child(ren) go to school?  If they do, ask them to describe a normal school.  What would they say in reaction to all of pigeon's fears?
- One Red Sock asks children to guess the color from the rhyming word on the previous page.  See if your child would be able to continue writing the book with more colors used for socks.

- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock.
- Color bunnies.
- Cut on dotted lines to make cards.
- Mix up cards and try to find matching opposites.

Extension Activities:
- Make a beaded necklace using small pony beads and large wooden beads.  Ask your child to do a pattern of small and large beads.
- Play a game where the kids do the opposite of what you say.  An example would be bending down if told to stretch up high.

Colors Story Time: August 15 (Outdoors) - August 16 (Virtual), 2021

Craft: Tissue Paper Elephant
- Print and cut out template on heavy paper or cardstock
- Cut multiple colors of tissue paper into small squares
- Color elephant
- Glue tissue paper squares to elephant






Extension Activities:
- Go on a color scavenger hunt.  Have each child pick a different color.  Then have them count the things they find that are their chosen color.
- Make colored ice cubes by adding a drop of food color to water before freezing.  (Optional - Stick a popsicle stick in each cube before freezing for easy holding.)  Then use the ice cubes to "paint" on either paper or outdoor sidewalk.
