Craft: Mustache Baby
- Print template (at left) onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (baby, mustache)

- Color pieces

- Glue mustache to baby's face

Extension Activities:

- Practice voting.  Have your child(ren) vote on different things such as favorite food, book, game, etc.

Craft: M is for Monsters
- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock
- Color pieces (M, teeth, eyes) before cutting out
- Glue eyes and teeth to M to make a monster
- Optional: Add sequins, pompoms, pipe cleaner, etc to further decorate your monster




Extension Activities:
- Dye macaroni noodles different colors.  (Directions can be found HERE.)  Once they are completely dry, you can do a lot of different activities including sorting by color, making pasta necklaces or collage art, etc.
- Have your child make a "Me" poster.  Draw a simple gingerbread person shape (or trace around your child if you have a large piece of paper).  Then have your child decorate the shape to look like them.  They can also add pictures or write things that describe who they are (i.e. what they like, what they do, etc.).

Craft:  Little Bunnies Opposite Match

- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock.

- Color bunnies.

- Cut on dotted lines to make cards.

- Mix up cards and try to find matching opposites.

Extension Activities:

- Make a beaded necklace using small pony beads and large wooden beads.  Ask your child to do a pattern of small and large beads.

- Play a game where the kids do the opposite of what you say.  An example would be bending down if told to stretch up high.

Craft: Person
The kids colored a large person cutout and glued on sparkles so it was no longer naked.

Extension Activities:
- Pug Meets Pig is all about friendship and sharing.  Schedule a play date for your kids stressing good friendship and sharing beforehand.
- The character of Beard Baby is introduced at the end of Mustache Baby.  Ask your child what they think would happen after Mustache and Beard Babies meet.  Then read the other books in the series to see how it is the same or different.

Children colored cutout ears, eyes, nose, and teeth before gluing to a paper bag to turn into a puppet.



Literacy Extensions:
- Come up with your own version of 10 Little Ninjas asking for suggestions for different types of characters.
- After reading Mustache Baby, discuss different activities and what makes them good or bad behavior.

Craft: Accordian-Fold Dog
This week's craft was based on the picture above.  Children colored a dog cutout that had been cut into front and back pieces.  They then glued a piece of accordian-folded paper between the two halves of the dog so the dog can expand.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Move Over, Rover!, talk about storms with your child.  Are they scary?  Why or why not?
- Have your child "practice" reading a book.  Have them tell you the story from the pictures.

Craft: Moth
I do not have a picture or a template of this project.  I came up with it on my own.  The children were given a moth body and two wings to color.  A half piece of pipe cleaner was wrapped around a clothespin for antennae.  The body and wings were then glued onto the clothespin.

Literacy Extensions:
- Learn about the differences and similarities between moths and butterflies.  For example, some moths are more colorful than butterflies.
- Talk about ways to deal with being mad (i.e. Mouse Was Mad)

2014 Building Block Nominees Story Time: September 8-9, 2014

Books:
Little Nelly's Big Book by Pippa Goodhart *
Mustache Baby by Bridget Heos *

Crafts:
Mustache Straw - Children colored a cardstock straw cutout that had two slits cut longwise into the center.  They then weaved it onto a bendy straw.
Police Badge - Children colored a cardstock police badge before stringing it onto yarn to wear as a necklace.

Literacy Extensions:
- See how many animals your child can identify from simple descriptions of them. (i.e. Little Nelly's Big Book)
- Have your child come up with more bad and good guys that might be identified by a certain type of mustache (i.e. Mustache Baby)
