Birds: Week 4 -- 1/30/24

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Duck
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper.
- Cut out pieces (circle body and head with beak) and color.
- Cut a cupcake liner into four triangles.  (You will use two of them for the wings.)  Color them.
- Glue pieces together as shown in picture at left.
- Optional: Cut two small holes at bottom of duck to turn into finger puppet.


Extension Activities:
- After reading Mama Built a Little Nest, try making some of the different types of nests shown in the book. 
- Compete in some penguin waddle races to see who waddles the fastest.

Craft: Folded Penguin
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out piecese (circle body and scarf)
- Color pieces on both sides
- Glue scarf to body below face
- Fold sides of body forward for wings




Extension Activities:
- Visit the Audubon for Kids website.  It has a lot of great information including games and activities for kids about birds.
- Enjoy a snack that birds would like (ex - sunflower seeds, raisins, nuts, etc).

Craft: Parrot
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out bird's body and cut along dotted line
- Color bird's body
- Fold down on dotted line and color back side for wing
- Cut three long strips of colored paper and glue to body for tail feathers



Extension Activities:
- After reading Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road? have your child(ren) draw their own answer to the joke.
- Have fun with some pretend play by acting like different types of birds (ex - waddle like a penguin, stand like a flamingo, fly like a hummingbird, etc.).

Craft: Flapping Bird
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (wings, body)
- Color pieces
- Fold wings along dotted lines
- Glue wings onto bird's body at marked location so wings will "flap"



Extension Activities:
- The birds in Oddbird are very concerned with their appearance and being colorful.  Ask your child to assemble an outfit that would impress the birds at the beginning of the book.
- Visit the St. Louis Zoo to view all the different types of birds.
