- Retell The Quiet Forest but with different animals.  Ask your child to suggest animals and what their action would be.
- Learn more about dinosaurs.  Check out one of the informational dinosaur books from the library.

Craft: Turtle
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out turtle
- Cut along solid line on shell
- Color turtle
- Fold shell over so solid line is underneath shell going to dotted line and glue in place so shell "pops" up


Extension Activities:
- I Am Stuck is about a turtle that is stuck on his back.  Have your children pretend to be different animals and see how they would become "unstuck".
- Take a nature walk to look at different types of trees.  Note the animals (birds, insects, etc) that live in those trees.

- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out body and color
- Cut spikes from colored paper
- Glue spikes to porcupine's body



Extension Activities:
- The narrator's dog is missing at the end of Mister Kitty Is Lost.  Ask your child "continue" the story in the same kind of format to find the dog.
- Work on problem solving.  Give your child examples of problems and ask them for the solution.

Craft: Dragonfly Clip
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out four wings
- Color clothespin body and wings
- Glue wings to top back of clothespin
- Glue on two sequins for eyes


Extension Activities:
- Have your children poll to see how many times they say the words "yes" and "no" throughout the day.  Which one do they use more often?
- Research insect habitats.  Plant insect-friendly plants in your garden.  Or visit the Butterfly House to learn more about butterflies.

Craft: Unicorn Headband
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper and cut out
- Cut out 1-2  long strips of cardstock or heavy paper
- Color unicorn horn and strips
- Glue unicorn horn and 1-2 strips into headband to fit child's head




Extension Activities:
- After reading all ten of the Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award nominee books, vote for your choice for the award at Missouri Library Association - Building Block Award (molib.org).
- Extend the book Cows Go Boo by adding more farm animals to the story.

Craft: Sheep
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper and cut out
- Cut cardstock or heavy paper into 4"x1/2" strips.  
- Glue strips into starburst shape making it as full as you like.  
- Optional: Leave 2-4 strips to glue to bottom of starburst sheep body for legs.
- Color head and glue to center of body.





Extension Activities:
- Play a game of Simon Says.  See how well the kids follow the "rules" that Simon gives.  Make longer sequences of actions to do in a row.
- Make a sheep mask by cutting out the center of a large paper plate.  Then cut out two triangles and glue them to the top of the plate ring.  Glue cotton balls around the plate's ring.  To turn into a mask, either glue a jumbo craft stick to the bottom or tie a string to either side of the ring.

Craft: Bee
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Color long strip as bee's body adding eyes to middle of strip
- Pinch ends together and glue to make body
- Color hearts as wings
- Glue wings to top of bee's body




Extension Activities:
- Make a snack bee to eat out of a banana.  Stripe melted chocolate along the banana.  Poke two chocolate chips at one end for the eyes.  Stick two pretzel braids on either side of the banana for wings.
- Go over fire safety with your child(ren).  Discuss the different tools that a firefighter might use including hoses, fire axes, fire hydrants, etc.

Craft: Bird
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Color pieces (body, wing) and cut out
- Fold wings on dotted lines
- Place glue inside folds of wings and glue to top of bird
- (Optional) Hole punch bird in middle of wings and tie a piece of string.  This will allow the birds wings to "flap".



Extension Activities:
- Learn more about different types of birds (including kingfishers like from the book Mel Fell).  Check out informational bird books from the library or visit a local pet store for more information.
- Play the Quiet Game.  See who can stay quiet the longest.

- Fold a small paper plate in half and color as shark's body making sure to draw on mouth and eyes
- Cut out a fin and tail from heavy paper or cardstock and color

Craft: Skunk
- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock and cut out pieces
- Cut out a 4" x 2" rectangle from heavy paper or cardstock as skunk's body
- Color pieces (body, head, paws, tail)
- Glue head to top of body
- Glue tail to side of body
- Glue paws as desired




Extension Activities:
- As we do not live by a beach, have your child build a "sandcastle" out of Lego or other building bricks.
- Do a smell test.  Ask your child to identify various scents with their eyes closed.  Possible scents could be food, perfumes, etc.

- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock
- Color template (arms, legs, head) and cut out
- Cut a piece of heavy paper or cardstock into quarters.  Color one quarter as the bear's body.
- Roll quarter sheet and glue into a tube
- Glue legs around bottom back of the tube
- Glue arms around center back of the tube
- Glue head to top of the tube





Extension Activities:
- Take a poll of your friends and family to see what their preferred greeting is -- hug, handshake, high five, etc.
- Play a game of Hide & Seek with your bear.

Craft:  Octopus
- Color octopus head and eight strips of paper (legs/arms).
- Glue strips legs/arms to band at bottom of octopus’ head.
- Glue band with legs/arms into a circle to complete your octopus.
- Optional — Curl the edges of the octopus’ arms/legs.
(A limited number of crafts are available for pick up at the Arnold Branch Monday, 11/16 - Saturday, 11/21/20.)



Extension Activities:
- Take a poll of family members -- Are an octopus' tentacles arms or legs?
- Practice drumming with the videos from Musication on YouTube.  If you would like something quieter, try clapping along instead of "drumming".

- Print out and cut out bunny hat template.
- Color pieces (ears, head band, and extra band).
- Glue ears to top of head band.
- Glue or tape extra band to head band to make into hat.  Add an extra piece if needed.






Extension Activities:
- Discuss expectations of how you expect a story to go.  All three of this week's books defy expectations of how stories will proceed in some way.  Ask your child how you thought the books would go versus how they actually ended.
- Learn more about what different animals eat. There are several great books at the library on the topic that can be checked out.
- Read the poem "The Tyger" by William Blake that Fear the Bunny is based on.

Craft: CD Teddy Bear
The kids colored cardstock cutouts of bear's head and paws before gluing to a used cd-rom.




Extension Activities:
- Hello Hello introduces aspects as animals throughout the book.  Ask your child to come up with their own "Hello's" based on the aspects they see in the illustrations.
- Play a game of hide and seek with the CD Teddy Bear craft you make.  Hide the teddy bear and see if your child can find it.

Building Block Nominees Story Time: Week Three: September 23-24, 2019

Books:
Eat Pete! by Michael Rex *
A Perfect Day by Lane Smith *
The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld *

Craft: Outlined Rabbit
The kids colored a large sheet with a bunny outline on it.  They then glued on small paper squares to the black outline.

Extension Activities:
- Discuss with your child what things would make up their "perfect day".
- The Rabbit Listened shows different ways to react when things go wrong.  Discuss with your child the different ways of acting and which they think are better.

Building Block Nominees Story Time: Week 2: September 16-17, 2019

Books:
Beware the Monster! by Michael Escoffier
Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings

Craft: Dog Puppet
Kids colored a dog face, ears, and tongue before gluing them to a paper bag to make into a puppet.

Extension Activities:
- Can I Be Your Dog? is told through letters.  Have your child write a letter to someone.  If they are not able to write yet, have them draw pictures to tell a story in the letter.
- Beware the Monster can be a little scary for younger children.  Ask your child for ways they could "beat" the monster to help them combat any fear they might have.
