Naughty or Nice? Bedtime: December 11-12, 2017

Books:
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow *
Froggy Goes to Bed by Jonathan London
How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? by Jane Yolen
Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Going to Sleep? by Bill Martin Jr.
Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney *

Craft: Standing Sheep
This week's craft was based on the picture at left with a few changes.  The kids were given a sheep's head and cotton balls to glue to a recycled CD.  Two clothespins were then attached to the bottom to make the sheep stand.

Literacy Extensions:
- A lot of these books go through bedtime rituals before the characters go to sleep.  Talk with your child about the rituals they go through before bed.  Have them try to list all the rituals in order they do them each night.
- Bedtime is a great time to read stories together.  Make sure to pick books that will calm your child rather than get them excited.

Rhyming Story Time: August 24-25, 2015

Books:

Here Comes the Big, Mean Dust Bunny! by  Jan Thomas *
I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont *

Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas *

Craft: Rhyming Dust Bunny Puppet
Our craft this week is pictured at left.  Crepe paper strips about 5" long were cut in half longways to make thinner strips.  The strips were glued to a paper lunch bag.  Eyes, a nose, and two ears / horns cutouts were glued to the puppet for features.

Literacy Extensions:
- Practice rhyming with your child by asking them to come up with rhyming words for the word you supply (i.e. cat, fat, rat, etc.)
- Read rhyming books with your child.  See if they can supply the rhymes at the end of the line / page.

Tummy & Tushie Story Time: November 17-18, 2014

Books:
The Belly Book by Joe Harris *
The Butt Book by Artie Bennett
Chicken Cheeks by Michael Ian Black *
I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont *
Mother Mother I Feel Sick Send for the Doctor Quick Quick Quick
          by Remy Charlip

Craft: Gingerbread Person
Each child was given a coloring sheet of a gingerbread person.  They were directed to color it like they would like to paint themselves (i.e. I Ain't Gonna Paint No More!).  I also handed out sparkles for those who would like to add them to their picture.

Literacy Extensions:
- Explain how different words can mean the same thing (i.e. Chicken Cheeks).  See if your child can come up with some examples.
- Use The Belly Book as an opening to talk about healthy eating.

Notes:
While I love all of the books I used this week, they really do go over best with the older children.  The Belly Book was a little long for the toddlers we had.  Also, the humor of Chicken Cheeks goes over better with slightly older children.  Although I did hear a lot of snickering from the parents on that one.

Literacy Expanders:
- See how many rhyming words you can come up with to rhyme with body parts like in I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! (i.e. head, bed, said, etc.)
- Try reading a book that repeats a common word often and replace that word with the spelling to see if your child can figure out what the word is (i.e. - Where's My T-R-U-C-K?)
