Kids Song: Hush, Little Baby

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Mockingbird
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out bird making sure to also cut the wing up to the dotted line

- Color bird on both sides

- Fold head and wing down

Extension Activities:

- Extend the song Hush, Little Baby by adding in additional items to purchase.

- A common fear at bedtime is the dark.  Decorate a night light for your child's room.  Get a simple night light from the dollar store and decorate the shade using Sharpies.

Creepy Monsters, Sleepy Monsters -- 5/20/25

Craft: Monster Puppet
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out monster

- Color monster

- Fold along dotted lines to make mouth than can open/shut

- Optional: Glue sequins on for more decoration

Extension Activities:

- Bedtime stories are a great way to end the day with your child.  Choose books that are calming rather than more excitable books.
- Have a PJ fashion show.  Ask your child(ren) to show off their best pajama fashions.

Craft: Yawn

- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out pieces (body, arms, legs)

- Color pieces

- Glue arms and legs to body

- Cut a small piece of yarn and glue to head for hair

Extension Activities:

- Watch a yawning animals video with your child and see who can last the longest without yawning.  (One possible video can be found HERE.  Lots of others can be found on YouTube.)

- Poll each member of your family to see which is their favorite bedtime story to read.  Do they like to read the same story every night?  Do they have a favorite lullaby?

Craft: Star Streamer
The children were given a twinkle star cutout to color.  They then glued on sparkles and streamers to the bottom.  A string was tied through a hole punch at the top of the star.

Literacy Extensions:
- Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by Jane Cabrera extends the popular song by adding several verses.  See if your child can come up with some verses highlighting other animals and parts of the world.
- Good Night Owl is a good book to discuss how to problem solve.  Ask them how they would have solved the problem of finding the "noise".

Craft: Standing Sheep
This week's craft was based on the picture at left with a few changes.  The kids were given a sheep's head and cotton balls to glue to a recycled CD.  Two clothespins were then attached to the bottom to make the sheep stand.

Literacy Extensions:
- A lot of these books go through bedtime rituals before the characters go to sleep.  Talk with your child about the rituals they go through before bed.  Have them try to list all the rituals in order they do them each night.
- Bedtime is a great time to read stories together.  Make sure to pick books that will calm your child rather than get them excited.

Craft: Dinosaur Hat
Children colored two strips of cardstock (8-1/2" x 2-1/2"), added eyes and a nose, and glued together to make the dinosaurs head.  Five triangle spikes (2-1/2") were colored and glued to top.  Eight triangle teeth (1") were glued to bottom.

Craft: Driver's License
Children were given a driver's license to fill out with name and age.  They could also either glue on a photo of themselves or draw a picture of themselves.

Literacy Extension:
- Have your child come up with their own version of "Five Little Monkeys" (i.e. hippos hopping, rabbits spinning, etc.)

Craft: Stegosaurus
I used the image above as a template for a stegosaurus body and spikes.  The spikes were cut out separately from the body.  Children colored the body and spikes and then glued them together to make their dinosaur.

Literacy Expanders:
- Learn about the different dinosaurs.  Discuss why you like one more than another.
- See if you can retell other fairy tales using dinosaurs as creatures such as Mo Willems did in Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs.
