Kids Song: Row, Row, Row Your Boat -- 1/13/26

Craft: Folded Boat Picture
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Color picture above the dotted line
- Fold up along dotted line
- Fold bottom corners diagonally up towards top of folded up piece
- Open back up and fold corners in towards center with bottom piece on the front side of picture
- Color bottom of fold as boat






Extension Activities:
- Play a game of Transportation BINGO on your next car trip.  Ask your child to find various types of vehicles (truck, motorcycle, RV, etc) and colors to try to get a BINGO.
- Try to build a simple boat our of recycled materials that will actually float.  Materials that might be useful include plastic lids, craft sticks, cardboard, etc.

- Make a simple recipe together with your children.

- Ask your child to build a mountain.  They could use Legos, books, etc.

- Have a family carol sing-along.  Sing each family member's favorite holiday song.
- Make and decorate holiday cookies with your children.

Craft: Cone Santa
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Color Santa
- Cut out colored cone with tab
- Glue along the tab before rolling into cone.  You may want to tape to reinforce the glue.
- Optional:  Glue pieces of cotton ball or tissue paper on Santa's beard



Extension Activities:
- Make Christmas cards for family and friends.  This allows your child to both practice their writing and be creative artistically.
- Go on a scavenger hunt for Christmas related items (ex - candy canes, ornaments, star, etc.).

- Color farm animals
- Cut out animal puppets
- Glue band at bottom of puppet into ring to fit onto finger


Extension Activities:
- Visit a petting zoo or farm to see different farm animals.
- Engage in pretend play by acting like different farm animals.  Ask your child to move and speak like those animals.

Craft: Folded Dog
- Cut out two 4" squares of paper
- Fold both squares in half to make triangles
- Fold corners of first triangle down to make face and ears
- Fold corners of second triangle towards center and back to outside to make body and legs
- Glue head to body
- Color dog



Extension Activites:
- Go on a field trip to a zoo, petting zoo, or farm.  As you visit the different animals have your child make the sounds of that animal.
- Play a game of Simon Says with animal sounds.

Craft: There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe
- Print out template on heavy paper / cardstock
- Cut out shoe, woman, and kids
- Color pieces
- Glue woman and kids to shoe
- Hole punch 4-6 holes along side of shoe
- Lace yarn through holes and tie at top




Extension Activities:
- Practice lacing and tying shoes with your child.
- Today's book is just one version of the popular "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" rhyme.  Try to write your own version of the rhyme with your child.

Craft: Star Mobile
- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock.
- Color spiral and cut out.
- Cut out stars and decorate with crayons, sparkles, etc.
- Tape stars to short 3-4" pieces of yarn or ribbon.  Then tape the yarn to the spiral in intervals.
- Hang spiral so center piece as at top and stars hang down.




Extension Activities:
- Explore the night sky.  Count the stars.  Try to find constellations.  View the sky through a telescope.
- Have fun by making star shaped food using a star cookie cutter.  You could make and decorate cookies.  You could also cut sandwiches into the shapes of stars.

Craft: Ship in a Bottle
The kids were given a bottle with a boat cutout to color.  They then glued on blue sequins and ocean-themed sequins for decoration.


Literacy Extensions:
- See how many different types of transportation your child can list.  Give them clues if needed.
- Visit the Transportation Museum in Kirkwood to view the different types of transportation.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star (Bedtime) Sing-Along Story Time: May 29, 2018

Books:

Craft: Star Streamer
The children were given a twinkle star cutout to color.  They then glued on sparkles and streamers to the bottom.  A string was tied through a hole punch at the top of the star.

Literacy Extensions:
- Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by Jane Cabrera extends the popular song by adding several verses.  See if your child can come up with some verses highlighting other animals and parts of the world.
- Good Night Owl is a good book to discuss how to problem solve.  Ask them how they would have solved the problem of finding the "noise".

Star Story Time: March 19-20, 2018

Craft: Telescope
This week's craft is based on the picture above.  The children colored a half-sheet of cardstock before gluing into a cylinder.  They could then decorate their telescope with star stickers.  (You might need to use tape to reinforce the glue on the telescope.)

Literacy Extensions:
- Learn about the various constellations.  There are several great books about constellations for young children.
- Visit the St. Louis Planetarium to learn more about the night sky.

Boats Story Time: May 23-24, 2016

Books:
The Father Who Had 10 Children by Benedicte Guettier *
One-Dog Canoe by Mary Casanova *
Row, Row, Row Your Boat by Jane Cabrera *
Three Bears in a Boat by David Soman
Tugga-Tugga Tugboat by Kevin Lewis

Craft: Boat Picture
The children were given a sheet with the outline of a boat made out of shapes.  They were also given the shapes already pre-cut out to color.  They then matched the shapes to glue them on the paper to make a boat.

Literacy Extensions:
- Come up with additional verses to Row, Row, Row Your Boat adding in more animals.
- See how many different types of boats your child can name (i.e. canoe, yacht, submarine, etc.)


Notes:
The Father Who Had 10 Children by Benedicte Guettier has been re-released as The Dad With 10 Children.  The original translation of the French story is much better so try to find that version if possible.

2015 Building Block Award Nominees Story Time: September 14-15, 2015

Craft: Scarecrow
The kids were given a gingerbread man die cut, overalls, and a hat cut from cardstock to color.  They were then glued together along with yellow construction paper strips for straw.


Literacy Extensions:
- Extend Row Row Row Your Boat or Down by the Barn by adding more verses for additional animals.
- Pick an animal to learn more about.  Books are available at the library on most animals for children.


Notes:
As there was no Monday Story Time last week due to the Labor Day holiday, this week's Monday story time included the books from both this week and last week.

Polar Bears Story Time: January 13-14, 2014

Craft: Polar Bear Picture
Each child was given a coloring sheet of two polar bears.  The children colored the sheet and glued on tissue paper for snow. 

Literacy Extensions:
- Find photos of the Northern Lights and explain how they are created to your child (i.e. Polar Bear Night)
- Share a book with your child that gives information on various types of bears.
