Picture Book Genres: Things That Go -- 7/19/22

Backhoe Joe by Lori Alexander
Bear on a Bike by Stella Blackstone

The Little Ice Cream Truck by Margery Cuyler
Snakes on a Train by Kathryn Dennis
Truck Full of Ducks by Ross Burach

What Can a Crane Pick Up? by Rebecca Kti Dotlich


Craft: Airplane
- Cut out a 1-1/2" x 8-1/2" strip of heavy paper or cardstock
- Color before pinching the ends of the strip together and gluing to make the plane's body
- Cut out two 1" x 4-1/4" strips of heavy paper or cardstock
- Color both strips of paper
- Fold one strip of paper in half and then fold up the ends about 1" from original fold.
- Glue the folded strip to the pinched end of the plane's body for the tail
- Glue the other strip to towards the top front of the plane's body for the wings
- Optional: Draw eyes onto front of plane.


Extension Activities:
- Play a game of car bingo.  Fill out a bingo grid with color and types of vehicles (car, bus, truck, etc).  Then mark off as you see the different types.  The first to get a full line wins.
- Take a field trip to the National Museum of Transportation.

Craft:  Baby in Stroller
- Cut a small paper plate in half and color both pieces
- Glue paper plate pieces together as shown in picture
- Cut out two small circles and color as wheels
- Glue wheels to bottom of stroller as shown
- Cut out a gingerbread person and color as baby
- Glue baby as peeking out of stroller 





Extension Activities:
- Children love to play pretend.  Have them pretend play they are in school.  Let them be the teacher and have them "teach" you something.
- Facing new experiences can be scary for children.  That is part of the reason we have the Life Experiences genre of picture books.  Help your child face their fears of new things by reading a related book and talking about how it will affect them.

- Print the template above onto cardstock
- Trace letters and color pictures
- Cut out dominoes

Extension Activities:
- The more you read to your child the more their vocabulary increases.  Participate in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the JCL-Arnold Branch to encourage reading to your child.
- Go on a color scavenger hunt.  See how many of items you can find for each color.  Or make it a competition between several people.

- Color head/face and extra strip
- Glue strips together to make headband
- Color and glue ears to head






Extension Activities:
- Watch one of the many animated adaptations of a fairy tale or folk tales (i.e. Chicken Little, Sleeping Beauty, etc.).
- After reading a traditional fairy or folk tale, ask your child to retell the story from one of the other character's point of view.

Craft: Cupcake
- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock
- Color cupcake and candle before cutting out
- Glue candle to cupcake
- Optional: Add sequins for sprinkles




Extension Activities:
- Explore the different holidays with your child.  See if they can explain what each holiday celebrates and when they are celebrated during the year.
- A lot of celebrations include gifts.  Have your child practice "writing" thank you notes.  If they are too young to write, they can draw their thank you note.

Craft: Flamingo
- Print out template on heavy paper or cardstock
- Color pieces (body, wing) and cut out
- Glue wing onto flamingo's body
- Hole punch at bottom of flamingo's body
- Thread pipe cleaner through hole and twist to stay in place.  Bend pipe cleaner so flamingo standing on one leg.




Extension Activities:
- Review body parts with your child.  Ask your child to name the different body parts as you point to them.  
- Sing some "ME" songs such as Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, If You're Happy and You Know It, etc.
