Picture Book Genres: Things That Go -- 7/19/22

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am and Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm.  Online Story Times will be posted weekly on Tuesday mornings.  (The video is available to watch for one week before a new one is uploaded.)

Backhoe Joe by Lori Alexander

Craft: Airplane
- Cut out a 1-1/2" x 8-1/2" strip of heavy paper or cardstock
- Color before pinching the ends of the strip together and gluing to make the plane's body
- Cut out two 1" x 4-1/4" strips of heavy paper or cardstock
- Color both strips of paper
- Fold one strip of paper in half and then fold up the ends about 1" from original fold.
- Glue the folded strip to the pinched end of the plane's body for the tail
- Glue the other strip to towards the top front of the plane's body for the wings
- Optional: Draw eyes onto front of plane.


Extension Activities:
- Play a game of car bingo.  Fill out a bingo grid with color and types of vehicles (car, bus, truck, etc).  Then mark off as you see the different types.  The first to get a full line wins.
- Take a field trip to the National Museum of Transportation.

Craft: Monster Truck
- Print and cut out template of truck on heavy paper
- Color truck
- Glue two CDs to truck for wheels





Extension Activities:
- This week's book is based on the popular children's song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm".  Sing the original with your children asking them to come up with animals for the verses.
- Visit a car or transportation museum to see the different vehicles.

Construction Worker Story Time: May 14-15, 2018

Craft: Construction Puzzle
The kids colored a cardstock coloring sheet of a construction site.  They could then cut along the grid on the back of the sheet to make a 16 piece puzzle.

Literacy Extensions:
- Kids love construction vehicles.  Learn more about the different types of vehicles by checking out books at the library.
- As you read various construction books, see if your child can tell you what the different construction vehicles do.

Truck & Tractor Story Time: May 16-17, 2016

Craft: T is for Tractor
The craft for this week is picture above.  The children were given a large T, small T, small L and two circles to color and then glue together into a tractor.

Literacy Extensions:
- Most children assume all tractors are green as John Deere tractors are very common.  Explore different color tractors and learn what companies use what colors.
- After reading I'm Brave, have your child "write" a similar book about another kind of truck or tractor.  Have them give characteristics and list what they do for their job.

Yellow Story Time - March 18-19, 2013

Craft: Paper Plate Sun
Children drew a face onto a paper plate before gluing pieces of yellow tissue paper over the top of it.  Strips of yellow paper were glued to the back of the plate as the sun's rays.

Literacy Extenders:
- Discuss different things you could pretend to be if wearing yellow as in the book In My New Yellow Shirt.
- Draw a map of the town and job sites in Dig!.
