Orange -- 6/10/25

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Clownfish

- Print template (above) onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out clownfish

- Color clownfish

- Cut orange paper into small pieces.  Glue pieces to stripes of clownfish

Extension Activities:

- Hold a taste testing of orange foods -- oranges, canteloupe, carrots, sweet potatoes, cheez-its, cheetos, goldfish crackers, etc.

- Plant a carrot top.  Cut off the top of the carrot and trim away the leaves.  Place the carrot top in a small container on top of a layer of pebbles.  Let your child pour water in up to the carrot.  Wait for it to start to grow roots and then transplant to dirt.

Extension Activities:

- Discuss different fears with your child.  Come up with strategies to deal with these fears.

- Have a scavenger hunt with your child.  Hide several plastic spiders throughout an area and ask your child to find them.

- Hold a "scary" movie marathon with child appropriate movies.

Orange & Yellow Story Time: March 9-10, 2020

Craft: Monarch Butterfly
The children colored a pair of monarch butterfly wings or they glued on orange and black paper squares to the wings.  The wings were then glued to a jumbo craft stick.  Half a pipe cleaner was twisted around the top of the craft stick to make antennae.

Extension Activiites:
- After reading In My New Yellow Shirt, ask your child to "write" their own version of the story using a different colored shirt.
- Learn more about various types of butterflies by taking a trip to the Butterfly House.

Rabbits Story Time: April 15-16, 2019

Craft: Rabbit
This week's craft is based on the picture at left.  The children colored a half sheet of cardstock with a bunny's face on it.  They then rolled and glued it into a cylinder to make the rabbit's body.  Two ears and a bowtie were also colored and glued to the cylinder to complete the rabbit.

Extension Activities:
- This week's focus letter is "R" for rabbit.  You could also do the letter "B" for bunny.  Ask your child to point out those letters on the page as you are reading.
- Zomo the Rabbit is a trickster folk tale form West Africa.  Share some other folk tales featuring rabbits including the Brer Rabbit tales.

Craft: Carrot Shapes Match
The children matched orange shape cutouts to a carrot printout sheet. If a shape was missing, they filled it in with pea cutouts.

Literacy Extensions:
- Sea Monkey & Bob is book about fears and overcoming those fears.  Discuss with your child what fears they might have and ways people might be able to help them deal with those fears.
- Carrot & Pea points out the similarities and differences between two friends.  Have your child find ways two different objects are simliar and different.

Craft: Paper Plate Clown
We made a very simple clown this week.  Children colored a triangle hat, bowtie, and small paper plate with a face.  They then glued the pieces together along with strips of red paper for hair.

Literacy Extensions:
- Talk with your child about how the letter "c" makes different sounds.  It has the hard "c" in clock and the soft "c" in city.  You could also discuss how the sound changes when added to an "h" in change.
- For a fun activity have your child try to come up with fortunes for a fortune cookie. (i.e. Fortune Cookies)

Notes:
There was no Monday story time this week due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
It was interesting that all of our books this week had to do with food.
