Craft: Magic Hat

- Print template on heavy paper or cardstock.

- Cut off magic hat section and then cut out bunny, cat, and dinosaur.

- Color pieces.

- Glue craft sticks to the back of the cat, bunny, and dinosaur.

- Cut a slit in the magic hat on the line.

- Stick the various animals through the slit to appear in the magic hat.

Extension Activities:

- Write (or draw) letters to send to your friends.

- Ask your child to find the similarities and the differences between themselves and their friends.

Craft: Hat
This week's craft is based on the picture above.  The kids were given half a paper plate to decorate with crayons, paper pieces, and sequins.  They then glued on strips of paper in a ring to the back to make it into a hat they could wear.

Extension Activities:
- This Is Not My Hat is about stealing.  Have a discussion with your child about the reasons why we should not take something that is not ours.
- Ask your child to find the hats you have in your house.  Then ask them to sort them by color, size, etc.

Craft: Goat Headband
The children colored the head, horns, ears, and beard of the goat before gluing them all together and then onto strips of paper turned into a headband.

Literacy Extensions:
- Continue the counting fun by having your children count items throughout the house (i.e. chairs in a room, magnets on the refrigerator, etc.).
- The author Mem Fox is from Australia and her books The Magic Hat and Possum Magic reflect that country in the animals and food from that country.  Learn more about Australia by checking out some books at the library.

Craft: Leprechaun's Hat
Our craft was based on the picture at left.  Using the template below, the center was cut out of a paper plate.  A paper belt / buckle was colored and glued to the colored plate.  The center of the hat was then folded up to make into the leprechaun's hat.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Which Hat is That?, extend the book by coming up with more riddles for different types of hats asking your child to figure out what the hat's are used for.
- Practice rhyming by asking your child for words that rhyme with hat and cap.

Craft: Letter "h" Horse
Our craft was based on the picture at left.  The children were given a lowercase "h" and a horse head to color and glue together.  They then glued on pieces of yarn for the horse's tail.

Literacy Extensions:
- See if your child can continue the book Which Hat Is That? by coming up with more descriptive riddles of different types of hats to wear.
- Explore the stages of building something.  See if you can make it into a song or poem with each step being a different verse. (i.e. The House in the Meadow)


Notes:
The book Hungry Hen by Richard Waring always goes over really well.  They tend to get very emotionally involved in the story so that the twist ending is a relief for them.
