Craft: Police Officer
This week's craft is pictured at left.  The children were given a uniform and hat to color.  They then colored a circle cutout as their face and glued all three pieces together.  They could then add either a gold or silver sticker as a badge.  As an option at home, they could cut a photo of themselves and glue over the circle to make themselves the police officer.

Literacy Extensions:
- Call your local police station to see if they allow visitors and would give a tour to your family.
- Talk about safety issues with your child (i.e. - stranger danger, street safety, etc.)

Craft: Police Car
Our craft was based on the picture at left.  A paper plate was chopped in half and then triangles cut out to make into the shape of a car.  The kids colored the car and wheels before gluing the wheels, star, windows, and light to the car.

Literacy Extensions:
- Talk with your child about stranger danger -- who is it safe to ask for help from?
- Discuss all the ways that police help people.

Craft: Owl Mask
These were some of the easiest masks we've made in story time.  The eyes were much easier to cut out in these.  The kids simply colored and glued the various pieces (face, eyebrow feathers, beak) together before gluing on a stick handle.

Literacy Extensions:
- Have a discussion with your child about the different fears you have.  Suggest ways to handle those fears.
- One common fear for children is a fear of the dark.  On a nice evening take your child outside to look at the stars.  See if you can identify any constellations.  Reassure your child that the stars and constellations are always there at night -- just sometimes they are behind the clouds.
