Ducks Story Time: April 24-25, 2017

Books:
Duck's Vacation by Gilad Soffer
Ducks Don't Wear Socks by John Nedwidek *
Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell *
Five Little Ducks by Denise Fleming
Tickle the Duck! by Ethan Long *

Craft: Duck Pond
This week's craft was developed from the picture at left.  The children were given a duck template to color.  (Template at bottom of this post.)  The template was then folded on the lines and glued at the head and tail so the ducks "stands".  The children then colored a paper plate and glued the duck to the plate.

Literacy Extensions:
- Learn about the different types of ducks.  There are informational books about ducks at the library for checkout.
- Visit a park with a pond to watch the ducks.  Try to identify the different types of ducks at that pond.

The kids colored a cardstock cutout of a dragon's face.  They then glued on strips of red and yellow crepe paper for fire.

- Use Me and My Dragon to talk about pet care.  Have your child come up with things they would need to do to take care of a pet dragon.
- Continue the letter recognition from the week before by asking your child to come up with different animals that start with the letter "D" (i.e. - dove, deer, dalmation, etc.)

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Dogs, practice counting and math skills by having your child conduct a survey of which kinds of dogs people like. (i.e. - small, big, spotted, hairy, bald, etc.)
- Practice letter recognition by having your child point out all the letter "D"s as you read a book.

Dinosaurs Story Time: April 3-4, 2017

Books:
Brontorina by James Howe
Dig Those Dinosaurs by Lori Haskins Houran *
Dinosaur Kisses by David Ezra Stein *
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems
How to Raise a Dinosaur by Natasha Wing
What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night by Refe Tuma *

Craft: Pterodactyl
This week's craft was based on the picture at right.  We simplified it a little by only adding a head and two feet to a small plate cut in half.  We also only used crayons to color the pterodactyl rather than gluing on tissue paper squares.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Dig Those Dinosaurs, visit a science museum to look at some actual dinosaur bones.
- Have your child try to "re-write" a familiar story substituting dinosaurs for the main characters like Mo Willems did in Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs.
