Dogs Story Time: April 10-11, 2017

Books:
Bark, George by Jules Feiffer *
Big Mean Mike by Michelle Knudsen
Charlie the Ranch Dog by Ree Drummond
Dogs by Emily Gravett *
Good Boy, Fergus! by David Shannon
Oh No, George! by Chris Haughton *

Craft: Dog
The children were given a dog cutout to color.  They could then choose either sequins for spots or yarn for hair to glue to their dog.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Dogs, practice counting and math skills by having your child conduct a survey of which kinds of dogs people like. (i.e. - small, big, spotted, hairy, bald, etc.)
- Practice letter recognition by having your child point out all the letter "D"s as you read a book.

Dogs Story Time: June 2-3, 2014

Books:
Big Mean Mike by Michelle Knudson *

A Dog Needs a Bone by Audrey Wood
The Doghouse by Jan Thomas *
Oh No, George! by Chris Haughton *

Craft: Dog
Children were given a dog cutout to decorate into their favorite type of dog.  Yarn pieces were available in case they wanted a hairy dog.

Literacy Extensions:
- Discuss different types of dogs and their characteristics.  What kind of dog does your child like?  What don't they like?  (i.e. Dogs)
- Practice letter recognition by having your child point out the letter "D" in the story's text.

Building Block 2013 Nominees Story Time: September 23-24, 2013

Books:
Let's Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy by Jan Thomas *
Oh No, George! by Chris Haughton *
One Special Day by Lola M. Schaefer *

Craft: Cow Headband
Children colored a cow head cut out from cardstock and then glued it to strips of paper made into a headband.  A cotton ball could be glued to the head for hair.

Literacy Extensions:
- Talk about fears you and your child might have.  Discuss ways to possibly overcome those fears.  (Let's Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy)
- Discuss how babies need to be treated (i.e. One Special Day)
