Craft: Vampire Treat Bag
This week's craft was loosely based on the picture at left.  The kids colored cutout hair, eyes, and bowtie before gluing to a paper bag.  They then drew on a mouth and fangs to complete their vampire.

Extension Activities:
- Go over safety tips before going trick or treating including wearing glow-in-the-dark at night to be seen, stranger safety tips, etc.
- Several of this week's books include counting as part of the story.  Practice counting with the treats received on Halloween.  Have your child separate the treats into the different kinds of food and then count them.

Craft: Witch Trick or Treat Bag
Children colored a cutout of witch legs and then glued to a brown paper lunch bag.  The bag was then used to go trick or treating in the library.

Literacy Extensions:
- Almost all of this week's books involve counting in some way.  Practice counting while reading the books by asking your child how many of certain type of monsters are on a page as you read through the book.
- Before going trick or treating discuss safety issues such as walking in the dark, stranger safety, etc.

Craft: Mummy Bag
The kids glued two eyeball cutouts and strips of white paper to the front of a bag to turn into a mummy trick or treat bag.


Literacy Extensions:
- Halloween is a great time to talk about stranger danger with your children.  Make sure to discuss safety issues before going trick or treating.
- Learn more about the history and symbols of Halloween.  The library has a couple books on the topics for children.


Notes:
The children went trick or treating through the library after story time this week.

Craft: Ice Cream Cone Picture
This week's craft was based on the picture at left.  Kids were given a brown triangle for a cone and two white mini-cupcake liners.  The cupcake liners were squashed flat and colored before gluing with the cone onto a half piece of cardstock.  They also had the option of gluing it onto a brown paper lunchbag to use while trick or treating.

Literacy Extensions:
- Use this opportunity to go over Halloween safety tips and rules while trick or treating.
- After reading Bad Kitty Does Not Like Candy, go over brush teething with your child.

Craft: Bat Trick or Treat Bag
This week's craft was based on the picture above.  About 2" of the top of a paper lunch bag was cut off to make the bat's body.  The children colored wings, feet, teeth, eyes, and ears and then glued them to the bag to make a bat.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading The Shivery Shades of Halloween ask your child to come up with more Halloween items for the different colors.
- Talk about Halloween safety with your child before going trick or treating.


Notes:
I changed the words of The Spooky Wheels on the Bus to "The Halloween Bus goes . . . " to make it even more Halloween appropriate.
The children went trick or treating throughout the library after the story time.

Craft: Mummy Paper Bag Puppet
Children drew eyes onto the bottom part of a brown lunch bag.  They then glued on strips of white paper to make it look like a mummy.  Extra slips could be glued to the sides for arms.

Literacy Extensions:
- Talk about Halloween safety with your children.
- Try to come up with Halloween costumes for various animals that are a play on words (i.e. - hot dog costume for a weiner dog like in The Hallo-Wiener)
