Halloween -- 10/29/24

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Frankenstein's Monster

- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper.

- Cut out pieces (head, hair) and color

- Glue hair to head

- Cut four strips of green paper

- Glue to head for arms and legs

- (Optional) Fold or curl arms and legs

Extension Activities:

- It is a St. Louis area tradition to tell a joke to get candy while trick or treating.  Practice telling jokes with your child in preparation.

- Make a batch of Witch's Brew drink for Halloween night by mixing lime sherbet, lemon-lime soda, and pineapple juice.  Click HERE for the recipe and for fun, spooky add-ins.

Craft: Paper Plate Leprechaun
This week's craft was based on the picture at left.  The kids colored a face and hair onto a large paper plate before gluing on a green hat.  They could cut slits around the plate for the beard if they liked.

Literacy Extensions:
- Learn about the history of St. Patrick's Day.  Tomie DePaola's book Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland gives a lot information about the real St. Patrick.
- Practice cutting shapes by making shamrocks out of various shapes (i.e. circles, hearts, ovals, etc.)

Craft: Bat Trick or Treat Bag
This week's craft was based on the picture above.  About 2" of the top of a paper lunch bag was cut off to make the bat's body.  The children colored wings, feet, teeth, eyes, and ears and then glued them to the bag to make a bat.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading The Shivery Shades of Halloween ask your child to come up with more Halloween items for the different colors.
- Talk about Halloween safety with your child before going trick or treating.


Notes:
I changed the words of The Spooky Wheels on the Bus to "The Halloween Bus goes . . . " to make it even more Halloween appropriate.
The children went trick or treating throughout the library after the story time.

Craft: Frankenstein Trick or Treat Bag
Our craft this week was based on the picture above.  We made our trick or treat bags out of brown lunch bags that the kids colored green.  They then glued on eyes and strips of black paper for the hair and neck bolts.  They could then add a mouth, nose and scars if they liked.

Literacy Extensions:
- Write your own version of "Over in the Meadow" using monsters (i.e. Little Goblins Ten)
- Discuss safety tips for trick or treating.

We went trick or treating through the library after the story times this week.
