Alphabet Story Time -- 8/2/21 (Outdoors) & 8/3/21 (Virtual)

Outdoor Story Times are held weekly on Monday mornings at 10:00 am and 11:00 am.  (Registration is required to attend.)  Online Story Times will be posted weekly on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am.  (The video is available to watch for one week before a new one is uploaded.)

Sign Language ABC by Lora Heller

Craft: Name Tree
- Color a half sheet of cardstock or heavy paper and then glue into a cylinder to make the tree' trunk

- Cut green paper into 1"x4" strips

- Write name on strips -- one letter on each strip

- Glue strips to top inside of trunk for the tree's leaves.  Make sure to glue strips in order so name is spelled out.

- Curl green strips/leaves down

Extension Activities:

- Play the Alphabet Game.  Look for the letters of the alphabet in order.  A variation is to look for items that start with the letters.

- Sing the ABC song.  Then for fun see if you can sing it backwards Z to A.

Craft: Alphabet Dominoes

- Print out template onto cardstock

- Trace letters and color pictures on templates

- Cut out dominoes

Extension Activities:

- Play a game of I Spy using letters.  (I Spy something that start with the letter . . . )

- Try to learn the alphabet in sign language.  The library has several books that can help with this.

- While reading a book, ask your child to point out all of a certain letter on the page.

Craft: Worms Counting Sheet
The kids colored a sheet with worms.  They then glued small strips of paper for stripes on the worms.  They had to glue the correct number of stipes on each worm as indicated by the number next to that worm.

Extension Activities:
- Play the Alphabet Game while in the car.  Ask your child to find all the letters of the alphabet (in order) in signs, license plates, etc.
- Practice counting everyday things.  (i.e. number of chips eaten at lunch, number of commercials during a TV show, number of stairs, etc.)

Craft: Alphabet Tree Match
The children were given a tree coloring sheet with the lower case letters mixed up on it.  The children glued upper case letters to the matching lower case letter.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Sign Language ABC have your child try to spell out some simple words in sign language.
- Practice letter recognition by asking your child to find all of a particular letter on each page of a book you are reading.

Kids colored a monster-shaped bookmark and glued on horns and sequins.


Literacy Extensions:
- Play the alphabet game while in the car.  Take turns finding the various letters of the alphabet on signs or license plates.
- There are a lot of fun foods that incoporate letters that you can have kids identify while they eat (i.e. Scrabble Cheezits, Alphabet Soup, M&Ms, etc.)

Craft: Alphabet Coloring Book
I found a printable alphabet coloring book online and printed it for the kids to color.  There are several available - simply choose your favorite one for your child.

Literacy Extensions:
- Practice written letter recognition.  Have your child point out all of the featured letters on a particular page.  Dr. Seuss's ABC works great for this as it uses both upper case and lower case letters.
- Practice phonetics by seeing if your child can go through the alphabet by giving their sounds rather than their names.
