The Alphabet: "D" -- 1/25/22

Books:
Arnie the Doughnut by Laurie Keller
Circle Dogs by Kevin Henkes
Dancing Feet by Lindsey Craig
Dig Those Dinosaurs by Lori Haskins Houran
Digger Dog by William Bee
Dinosaur Countdown by Nicholas Oldland
Dragon Was Terrible by Kelly DiPucchio
Ducks Don't Wear Socks by John Nedwidek

Craft: D is for Dinosaur
- Print out template onto heavy paper or cardstock
- Color pieces (D body, head, tail, feet, and spikes)
- Cut out pieces
- Turn D onto side to make dinosaur's body
- Glue head to one side and tail to other side of body
- Glue feet to bottom of body
- Glue spikes to top of body

Extension Activities:
- Practice rhythm with drumming.  Drum a simple beat and ask your child to repeat it.  Also, Musication on YouTube has a lot of great videos where kids can drum along to the beat.
- Discuss dog safety and best practices for dealing with new dogs with your child.

Daddy Story Time: May 22-23, 2017

My Father the Dog by Elizabeth Bluemle *
Nelly Gnu and Daddy Too by Anna Dewdney
Tell Me a Tattoo Story by Alison McGhee

Craft: Tie
The kids colored a cardstock cutout of a tie before gluing on sequins for decoration.  They then strung it onto a piece of curling ribbon so it could be worn by dad.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading My Father the Dog, have your child compare their dad with different types of animals.
- Child and father can work together to build a house out of a cardboard box like in Nelly Gnu and Daddy Too.

Dad Story Time: May 12-13, 2014

My Dad Is Big and Strong, But . . . A Bedtime Story by Coralie Saudo *
My Father the Dog by Elizabeth Bluemle
Oh, Daddy! by Bob Shea *

Craft - Superhero Dad
Each child colored a large gingerbread man cutout with a dad superhero logo printed on it. A paper cape was glued to the back.

Literacy Extensions:
- Practice letter recognition.  Have your child point out the "d" and "a"s in the story's text.
- Talk about ways in which your child father's is the same and different from the dads in the books you read.
