Opposites -- 8/25/26

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Short/Long Dog
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (front and back of dog)
- Color pieces
- Cut squares out of colored paper
- Glue squares in strip between dog's front and back ends to make either a short or long dog
- Optional: Once squares glued into place, accordian fold the squares so dog can be both long and short

Extension Activities:
- Designate an "Opposites Day" in which yes means no and no means yes.  You have to do the opposite of everything you are directed to do.  Can't last the whole day?  Designate a morning or afternoon.
- Play a game of Fast/Slow Freeze Dance.  Yell out fast or slow while the music is playing and freeze when the music stops.

Dogs by Emily Gravett
Double Take! A New Look at Opposites by Susan Hood
Go! Go! Go! Stop! by Charise Mericle Harper *
Marta! Big & Small by Jen Arena

Craft: Stop / Go Sign
This week's craft was based on the picture at left with a few modifications.  We made one sign with STOP on one side and GO on the opposite.  The children colored two circles to glue onto a used CD-rom.  They then glued or taped a jumbo craft stick with STOP written on one side and GO on the other side to the CD to match the colored circles.

Literacy Extensions:
- Practice opposites by making it a game.  Have your child try to come up with opposites throughout the day.  (i.e. hungry and full, up the stairs and down the stairs, etc.)
- Review all the various learning concepts you've covered this past month -- alphabet, counting, colors, and opposites.  Introduce other concepts such as shapes.

Craft: Stop / Go Sign
Children were given a stop sign cutout and the word "GO" to color and then glue to a small paper plate.  A large craft stick was glued to the plate to make it into a Stop Sign on one side and a Go Sign on the other.

Literacy Extensions:
- Practice opposites with your child by seeing how many opposites your child can come up with (i.e. big & small, high & low, etc.)
- Reinforce the idea of opposites by playing a game of Simon Says. (i.e. Stretch up high, touch the floor, etc.)
