Dive In! Bath Tubs -- 3/26/24

Story Times are held weekly on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:00 am. A monthly virtual Story Time is posted the first Tuesday of the month on the library's Facebook page.  It is available to view for one month before the next video is posted.

Craft: Rubber Ducky

- Print out template (at left) onto cardstock or heavy paper

- Cut out duck

- Color duck

- Optional:  Glue on sequins for extra sparkle

Extension Activities:

- Have fun with bubbles.  Either buy some bubble solution or make your own by mixing dish soap with water.

- Watch the video of Ernie from Sesame Street singing about his bath toy -- the Rubber Ducky.

Craft: J is for Jester
- Print template on heavy paper or cardstock

- Cut out pieces (J body, head, hat, hands)

- Color pieces

- Glue head to top of J

- Glue hat to top of head

- Glue hands to sides of J

Extension Activities:

- Take a field trip to an ice cream store.  Try a new flavor of ice cream.

- Practice counting and sorting with jelly beans.

- Make and decorate a kite.  Directions of several easy kites to make can be found online.

Merry Christmas! Story Time: December 23, 2019

Craft: Christmas Tree
This week's craft was based on the picture at left.  The children glued four strips of paper to a jumbo craft stick to make a Christmas tree.  (4-1/2"x1", 3-1/2"x1", 2-1/2"x1", 1-1/2"x1")  They then glued on a large star sequin to the top and could glue on sequins for ornaments.

Extension Activities:
- There are many traditions at Christmas.  Explore the different traditions with your child.  Learn the meaning behind the traditions and how Christmas is celebrated around the world.  (There are several books available at the library on these topics.)
- Go on a Christmas light scavenger hunt.  Drive through various neighborhoods to view the Christmas lights keeping track of different displays you see (i.e. snowflakes, stars, nativity, snowman, blow-up, etc.)

Naughty or Nice?: Bath Story Time: December 4-5, 2017

Craft: Kid in Bathtub
The children were given a half sheet with a tub on it to color and a die cut person.  After both were colored, the person was slipped into the slit cut along top rim of bathtub.

Literacy Extensions:
- Use the book Bath Time to practice counting.  Have your child count how many toys were put into the tub in the book.
- Have some bubble fun after reading this books.  Either purchase bubble solution or make your own with dish soap and water.

Christmas Story Time: December 21-22, 2015

Craft: Lace-Up Candy Cane
Children colored a cardstock candy cane cutout that was hole punched all down the center.  They then laced white yarn through the holes to make stripes.  A cardstock bow was then colored and glued onto the candy cane.  (Template below)

Literacy Extensions:
- Practice "writing skills" with your child by having them "write" thank you cards for their Christmas presents.  This can be as simple as drawing a picture of what they got and then writing their names.
- Learn about how different people celebrate Christmas.  There are several books available at the library about how Christmas is celebrated around the world.


Notes:
The candy canes could be laced in many different ways.  Each kid did it differently.  Some sewed it straight up the center.  Some alternated stripes from the different sides.  Any way they did it, it was great hand-eye coordination practice.

Craft: Paper Sun Kite
The template for this kite can be found online at http://www.ict.griffith.edu.au/anthony/kites/paper_sun.gif.  The children colored the cutout kite, folded and glued as instructed, and glued on crepe paper streamers.  I then hole punched for string that could be added at home.

Literacy Extensions:
- Use alphabet flash cards, asking your child to give the sound of each letter as it is shown.
- After reading the book Dinosaur Kisses, see if your child can break down the steps and tell how to give a kiss as if the person doesn't know what a kiss is.
