Mysteries in the Stacks: The Case of the Missing Chalk Drawings -- 5/28/24

Craft: Green Sheep
- Print out template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out sheep and color
- Cut green paper into small strips
- Optional: Tear green paper into smaller strips, curl the strips, or fold them
- Glue green paper onto sheep


Extension Activities:
- Riddles are basically short mysteries.  Ask your child some riddles to see if they can "solve" the answers.
- Have fun writing secret messages.  Use a white crayon on white paper to write a message.  Then brush over the message with watercolor paint.  The message should appear through the paint.

Craft: Cupcake Magnet
- Print out template on cardstock or heavy paper
- Color pieces (cupcake and icing) before gluing together
- Optional:  Glue on sequins for sprinkles
- Optional: Add a magnet to the back




Extension Activities:
- Bake a batch of cupcakes with your child.  Have them help measure ingredients, stir, and decorate the cupcakes.
- Hide some items around the house for your child to find.  Give them simple clues if they need help finding the items.

Craft: Squirrel
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (body, arms, legs, ears, and tail) and color.
- Roll body and glue into a ring.
- Glue medium strip onto inside front of ring to make arms that stick out either side.
- Glue feet to bottom of ring.
- Glue ears to top of ring.
- Glue tail to back of ring.
- Optional:  Curl tail if you like.


Extension Activities:
- Play a game of I Spy giving hints of the first letter the items start with.
- A great skill to have to solve mysteries is to pay attention and to remember.  Place several items on a tray and let your child look it over for 30-60 seconds.  Then take the tray away and have them tell you what was on the tray.  Increase the number of items on the tray each time to see how many things they can remember.

Craft:  Shark
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (body, flippers, fin)
- Color pieces
- Glue flippers to sides of body
- Fold fin in half and then on the dotted lines 
- Glue fin to top of shark's body


Extension Activities:
- One of the tools used by detectives is a magnifying glass.  Have your child "play" with a magnifying glass to see fine details of objects.  Use binoculars if you don't have a magnifying glass.
- Check out an I Spy book from the library.  Have your child search for specific items in the pictures.

Extension Activities:
- Send your child on a scavenger hunt.  Hide their stuffies or other toys and give clues as to where to find them.
- Make a mystery box.  Cut a hole in the top of a show box.  Place mystery items inside and see if your child can determine what it is just by touch.
- Explain how fingerprints can be used to solve crimes -- that each person's fingerprint is unique.  Then have some fun making form fingerprint art.  Check out an Ed Emberley fingerprint art book from the library for inspiration.
