Celebrating Authors: Dr. Seuss -- 3/3/26

Craft: Cat in the Hat
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (cat, hat)
- Color pieces
- Glue cat into a tube so stands
- Glue hat to cat's head





Extension Activities:
- Extend Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? by coming up with more sound effects.  Ask your child(ren) what different things might sound like.  Do the sounds effects in a pattern and then ask your child(ren) to repeat them back in that order.
- A lot of Dr. Seuss books incorporate rhyming.  Play a rhyming game by coming up with rhyming pair word pairs.

Craft: Airplane
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (body, wing, tailwing)
- Color pieces
- Pinch ends of large strip and glue together to make plane's body
- Glue one smaller strip about halfway across top of plane's body for wings
- Fold second smaller strip in half.  Then fold ends of strip up in opposite direction to make tailwing.  Glue to back top of plane.


Extension Activities:
- Extend the book/song Down by the Barn by adding more verses featuring different animals.  Ask your child for what the baby animal is called as well as the sound they make.
- Make different types of paper airplanes.  Which ones fly the best?

- Slide engine into slits in wheels

- Play a game of Conductor Says (Simon Says).
- Take a train ride (ex - zoo train, amusement park train, day-trip train ride, etc).

Craft: Paper Plate Rocking Boat
- Color outer ring of paper plate blue for water
- Color inner circle of paper plate as bottom of boat
- Fold plate in half (color on outside)
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (triangle sail, fish)
- Color pieces
- Glue sail to plate along fold
- Glue fish onto blue ring of water



Extension Activities:
- Elecopter is part of a series of books where animals are combined with types of transportation (ie - Monkey Truck, Turtle Tug).  Ask your children to design other animal/transportation combos.
- Use a small toy car to paint a picture.  Dip wheels into paint and then run it along a piece of paper.  Repeat with additional colors.

Craft: Hot Air Balloon
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Cut out pieces (balloon, basket)

- Hole punch a hole at the bottom of the balloon and at each top corner of the basket
- Cut a piece of yarn
- Tie basket and balloon together 



Extension Activities:
- Visit the Transportation Museum to learn about different types of transportation and to view the different types of vehicles.
- Talk about safety while riding different types of transportation.  How are they different between the different types?

- Extend the song "If You're Happy and You Know" by asking your child(ren) to come up with additional actions and verses.
- Make a collage of Happy Items.  Cut out pictures of things that make you happy from an old magazine.  Glue them onto another sheet of paper as a collage.

- Extend the song Hush, Little Baby by adding in additional items to purchase.
- A common fear at bedtime is the dark.  Decorate a night light for your child's room.  Get a simple night light from the dollar store and decorate the shade using Sharpies.

Craft: Folded Boat Picture
- Print template onto cardstock or heavy paper
- Color picture above the dotted line
- Fold up along dotted line
- Fold bottom corners diagonally up towards top of folded up piece
- Open back up and fold corners in towards center with bottom piece on the front side of picture
- Color bottom of fold as boat






Extension Activities:
- Play a game of Transportation BINGO on your next car trip.  Ask your child to find various types of vehicles (truck, motorcycle, RV, etc) and colors to try to get a BINGO.
- Try to build a simple boat our of recycled materials that will actually float.  Materials that might be useful include plastic lids, craft sticks, cardboard, etc.

- Pick up a felt square from the JCL-Arnold Branch to decorate.  Bring it back to the Arnold Branch for it to be added to the "Collage of Many Colors".
- Listen to some of Dolly Parton's music.  There are several animated videos of her children's songs on YouTube.
