Craft: Elmer the Elephant
Kids glued tissue paper pieces to an elephant cutout.


Literacy Extensions:
- Over in the Jungle includes several activities to do along with the story in the back of the book.  This includes movements for the different animals, information about the animals, etc.
- Talk about differences and similarities after reading Elmer.  Find things that are similar between various animals and then what their differences are.

Craft: Jellyfish
I found a coloring sheet of a jellyfish online and copied the head part onto cardstock and cut it out.  Children colored the head before gluing on crepe paper strips for the tentacles.

Literacy Extensions:
- After reading Emma Kate to your child, ask them which character was the imaginary friend.  Go back through the book looking at the visual clues to determine the answer.
- Have your child create the recipe for their favorite ice cream sundae (i.e. Ice Cream Soup)


Notes:
- It was difficult to come up with books that featured items starting with "I" or "J".  So we decided to combine them this week for our story time.

Craft: Bug Headband
The headbands we made were very similar to those pictured at left.  The main difference is that we had paper strips for the antennae instead of pipecleaner.

Literacy Extensions:
- Discuss with your child the life cycle of a butterfly (i.e. Waiting for Wings)
- See how many different kinds of bugs your child can name (i.e. Some Bugs)
